Q: How do you research a book-length investigation?
Every book starts with a question I can’t shake. The Settlement Machine began when a single caller told me about a foreclosure that didn’t add up. From there, it’s years of public records requests, source interviews, and document analysis.
I typically spend 2-3 years on major investigations. The research phase takes the longest — building relationships, chasing documents, and verifying every detail.
Q: Do you outline your books?
Loosely. I know the major revelations I want to uncover, but the story often takes unexpected turns. The best investigations are the ones that surprise me.
